We are the Birmingham African American Genealogy Group, Inc. (BAAGG), the oldest African American genealogy group in the state of Alabama. BAAGG was organized in 1999 as the Birmingham African American Genealogy Study Group under the Birmingham Genealogical Society (BGS). Our Group is incorporated in Jefferson County, Alabama and is a 501(c)3 entity under the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Code.


BAAGG Mission

To encourage genealogical research and documentation through presentations at local, state, and national events and seminars; offering of educational classes to our members and the community; and the publication of sound genealogical research by:
  •  Encouraging and supporting the use of genealogy as a tool for African Americans to become aware of their history and heritage
  • Encouraging the collection, preservation and maintenance of African American genealogical materials at various libraries, museums, and other repositories for our group and families
  • Stimulating our membership and the general public to research, study, and record their family histories
  • Promoting and maintaining high ethical standards in genealogical research and publications
